The Most Common Auto Accident Injuries Seen by Our Lakewood, Westminster, and Aurora Chiropractors

A car crash can cause any number of injuries, but some of them are more common than others. Here at Metro Denver Accident and Injury Centers, we see effects like neck pain, back pain, and whiplash regularly after an accident. We are specialists who help car crash victims exclusively at our offices in the Lakewood, Westminster, and Aurora areas of Colorado.

Auto Accident

Back and Neck Pain

Whiplash is the name for a condition where the ligaments or tendons of the neck get overstretched due to the head snapping back and forth rapidly. It can happen when playing sports or if you take a bad fall, but the most common cause is a car accident. When the vehicle rapidly decelerates, the passengers tend to be thrown forward and then back, causing whiplash. Whiplash tends to cause neck pain that may radiate down into the back, but it can also present differently.

Other types of back pain can also occur during an accident. Nerve damage from an injury to the spinal cord, which is extremely serious, or from something like a herniated disc, which is less serious, may occur. Numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain are common symptoms of nerve damage. If you have these symptoms after a car accident, you should see a doctor right away.

Head and Chest Pain

Another common injury from a car accident is a head injury. People inside a car that crashes often strike their head on a surface, which can cause a traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI can be relatively minor, such as a concussion, or very serious, such as a skull fracture. Pain in the head is the most common symptom of a TBI.

Minor injuries to the chest caused by a seatbelt are common in car crashes. For people not wearing a seatbelt, or for those in very serious crashes, more severe damage to the chest may include broken ribs and internal injuries. If you have been in a car crash and have head or chest pain, you should seek help from a doctor immediately.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help with Car Accident Recovery?

Chiropractic care can help with many car accident injuries. We can assist patients who walked away with relatively minor injuries get rid of their various aches and pains. We can also help people with more serious injuries rehab their bodies and get back to their lives.

Some people come to us right away after an auto accident, and others will not seek care until they have started to heal or discovered that their pain won't just go away. We recommend that anyone who has been in an auto accident seek help from a doctor—immediately if they are in pain or as soon as possible if they are not. Minor injuries may get worse without care, even if they are not currently causing pain.
