What Is a Pinched Nerve?

A condition that results in pressure against a nerve from bone, cartilage, tendons, muscle, or displaced tissue is known as a pinched nerve. This pressure is usually referred to as compression. It causes the pinched nerve to release pain signals to the brain. There are so many things that may result in a pinched nerve. It can be the result of bone spurs or herniated or bulging discs. Inflamed facet joints may also cause pinched nerves. These are joints located in the spine that gives you the ability to twist and bend your back. If these joints become inflamed, they can put pressure on surrounding nerves.

Symptoms of Pinched Nerves

Pain is usually the main symptom experienced with pinched nerves. Pinched nerves may also cause numbness, weakness, or tingling in areas of the body which surround the affected nerves. For example, if you are suffering from a pinched nerve in your back, you may experience pain in your buttocks, pack, and that pain may travel down into one leg. Back pain, however, is one of the most prominent symptoms of pinched nerves.

Risk Factors for Developing a Pinched Nerve

Certain factors may increase your risk of developing a pinched nerve. For example, developing a pinched nerve is relatively high for those living with osteoarthritis since joints become enlarged, making the risk of bone spurs developing relatively higher. A person's body mass, posture, age, and even genetic background can increase their likelihood of developing a pinched nerve. Pinched nerves may also develop from overuse of particular joints, such as repetitive motions of the shoulder.

How a Chiropractor Can Help

Chiropractic treatment for a pinched nerve consists of decreasing pressure on the nerve that is affected. Usually, a chiropractor will use chiropractic adjustments to help with the decompression of the disc. Traction machines or decompression machines are also used if more treatment is needed. These machines help to relieve back and neck pain even more.
