Chiropractic for Pain Management

Chiropractic Care for Pain Management

People who are in pain can rarely think about much else than getting the pain to stop. Unfortunately, traditional medicine may not have good options for people who are dealing with pain. Pain killers are usually prescribed for anyone who is suffering, and the truth is that they come with a lot of side effects. More concerningly, the body may adjust to the level of drug it receives over time, which may make pain killers less effective and force a person to take more in order to deal with their pain. We at Metro Denver Accident & Injury Centers serving Westminster, CO, Lakewood, CO, and Aurora, CO, know a lot about chiropractic care for pain management. A chiropractor on our team is here to provide chiropractic care for an auto accident injury form a car accident.

How Chiropractic Care May Help an Auto Accident Injury after a Car Accident

Chiropractic care, on the other hand, deals with the root causes of a person's pain. Rather than mask pain behind drugs that block the brain from receiving pain signals, chiropractic care addresses the nerves themselves. A person feels pain when the nerves of their body register an injury or pressure. These signals then travel along the nervous system to the brain, where the brain "reads" them as pain. In order to stop pain, the signal may either stop being produced by the nerves, or it can be interrupted from being processed by the brain.

Pain killing drugs interrupt the signal, while chiropractic care stops the nerves from producing the signal. A chiropractor does this by moving the muscles in the affected region of the body to reduce pressure on the nerves. Pressure is usually caused by two factors; muscles that have been forced out of their usual positions (usually by a traumatic force, such as that received in an auto accident), and inflammation of the muscle. Inflammation can be caused by several factors, including repetitive stress injuries, acute injuries, or even issues with the body's systems such as high blood pressure or diabetes. No matter what the cause, however, the result can be that the swollen, out of place muscle is placing a lot of pressure on surrounding nerves and tissue, causing these nerves to send pain signals.

By slowly and gently moving these muscles to their proper positions and manipulating them to reduce swelling and inflammation, it's possible to reduce the actual pain that a patient is feeling.
